Hungarian Retailers Reluctant to Accept SZÉP Cards
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced last week that the fringe benefit accumulating SZÉP cards can be used at retail units to buy food between February 1 and May 31, 2022 but retailers are reluctant to invest in establishing the card-reading infrastructure just for four months, a source told website 444.

The government confirmed on Thursday that food can be purchased with the SZÉP card.

Népszava calculates that Ft 270 billion, or about 10% of the annual food sales in Hungary, can be available on SZÉP cards.

The government has chosen a unique solution to prevent voters from feeling the sharp rise in food prices before the elections, the newspaper comments.
