Hotels in Hungary Hit by Russia-Ukraine War
Hungarian hotels can expect to lose 10,000 guest nights to cancellations in the three spring months due to the Russo-Ukrainian war, president Csaba Baldauf of the hotel and restaurant association Mszész estimated in comments to Portfolio.

Russian and Ukrainian tourists have disappeared, but fewer guests are arriving from other countries as well, due to the war. Booking cancellations especially affect rural spa towns, such as Hévíz and Hajdúszoboszló.

The mood of domestic travellers is unbroken, as Hungarian guests are arriving, but Western European tourists have clearly become more cautious, Baldauf added.

Typically, elderly foreign tourists cancel their trips, especially those from Germany, as they dare not come to Hungary because of war in a neighbouring country.

In addition, the hotel sector remains depressed by the fivefold increase in the price of natural gas, which has risen further in recent days. “We are currently making money just to cover energy bills,” said Baldauf.
