A worker at the port noticed that the top of a container shipped from Ecuador was damaged. As workers moved to weld it shut, they noticed that it contained suspicious packages, so they notified the police.
Budapest police found 71 packages, each weighing approximately one kilogram, which the expert examination showed to contain highly pure cocaine.
As the criminals would have diluted the drug five to seven times before it was released onto the street, the quantity confiscated has a street value of Ft 10-14 billion.
Police are investigating the shipment.
National Police also announced that they had impounded Ft 600 million worth of drugs and detained 109 people in their biggest drug raid to date following an operation that took several weeks.
