Foreign People-Smugglers Shoot at Police Before Being Trapped in Budapest Forest
People-smugglers fired at police who pursued them by car and on foot before the two culprits were caught in a small forest in Budapest on Monday morning.

The chase began when police tried to check a Ford Transit van with Hungarian license plates heading to Budapest on the M5 motorway near Inárcs, 20km southeast of Budapest.

Instead of stopping, the van drove on, as one occupant fired several shots in the direction of the Pest county police patrol car.

Police chased the vehicle, which was forced to stop after arriving in Budapest.

The driver of the car and his accomplice ran into a nearby forest, firing further shots at the police. An officer returned the fire after a warning shot.

Budapest Police cordoned off the area in the 19th District and dispatched a team of officers, canine units, investigators and forensic officers to the scene.

Eventually, the two men claiming to be Iraqi citizens were caught.

The van was carrying 21 illegal aliens, who identified themselves as Syrian nationals.

Nobody was injured in the shooting.

The two men have been arrested for human smuggling and for violence against an official.
