Insect Protein to be Prominently Labelled on Food in Hungary
Food products containing insect protein must be labelled accordingly, declaring that “This food contains insect protein!” in a font size at least as large as that used for the product name, according to a new decree issued after the EU allowed the sale of several such products.

Moreover, food containing insect protein must be placed and displayed separately for customers.

The regulation has not entered into force, because a public consultation is required. Consumers may express their views by sending an e-mail to the government at tarsadalmiegyeztetes@kormanyiroda.gov.hu.

Since the EU authorised the inclusion of insects in food at the end of January, several false or misleading posts began to spread on the Hungarian internet, according to fact-checking website Lakmusz.

The posts claimed that, with EU permits, manufacturing companies could put insects in food "secretly", without any indication or in some way "camouflaged".
