Should M0 Be Free? New Tolls Planned All Along Motorway Around Budapest
Mayor Gergely Karácsony spoke out yesterday against a Friday proposal by the Construction and Transport Ministry to charge a toll for the entire M0 motorway around Budapest.

At present, drivers must pay tolls on only two short sections of the M0.

Karácsony said the proposed change would cause considerable harm, not only to drivers, but to Budapest as well, as it would create more traffic jams.

With the additional tolls, drivers will drive through the city who had until now used the ring-road bypass, he said.

“It is not difficult to realise that if you can drive in the city for free, while avoiding it only for money, then more cars will drive through the city. However, the road network of the Budapest downtown area cannot bear this load,” he added.

“If most of the problems arise outside the city limits, then the treatment of them should begin there as well”, he wrote on Facebook.

Karácsony wrote that the city has put forward several initiatives to the cabinet to make use of the M0 completely free of charge and will do this again with “arguments, facts and data”.

Hungary will introduce motorway toll reductions in 2026 — the first price cuts since the vignette system began. The discounts apply in five counties and are intended to compensate drivers for long-term traffic disruptions caused by major construction projects on the M1 and M30, according to Origo.
