Rules on Prices of Food in Hungary Tightened by GVH
The GVH has tightened its price monitoring system for food retail chains, in order to eliminate a loophole, the competition authority announced.

A new rule stipulates that the price designated as the lowest price for a product category must prevail in at least 80% of the retail chain’s shops.

“Retailers who have reduced the price of certain food products in only one or two of their stores can no longer have an advantage over others”, the GVH said.

Portfolio reported earlier that at least one multinational food retail chain lowered the price of certain basic foods in only one or two stores in order to appear the cheapest on the comparison page on the GVH’s new price monitoring website.

The authority and the working group that created the food price monitoring system is constantly working on further developments.

Those who use the online monitoring system will soon be able to filter the shops on the website’s map according to proximity to the user. A related mobile app will also be developed.

In addition, an expansion of the product categories is expected in the autumn.
