Temu Starts Paying Compensation to Shoppers in Hungary
Whaleco Technology, the European operator of Chinese-owned online marketplace Temu, has started paying compensation to Hungarian consumers under an agreement reached with the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) over unfair business practices, the watchdog said on Monday.

The marketplace started paying consumers who made purchases on the platform between November 2023 and September 2024 HUF 2,000 apiece, in cash.

GVH had launched a probe of Temu's local practices after its experts assessed a number reports regarding the e-commerce platform.

Messages on Temu urging consumers to "hurry up" with their purchases because a limited number of the products were left, or touting products rated "five stars" by earlier buyers was likely a form of "psychological pressure", while promises of discounts of "as much as 95pc" could be misleading, GVH said at the time.

Whaleco was also fined HUF 437m for the practices.
