Momentum Initiates Referendum on Euthanasia in Hungary
The Momentum party joined euthanasia campaigner Dániel Karsai in submitting two referendum questions on the right to end one’s life, at the National Election Office (NVI).

The gist of the questions is whether ordinary people would opt for modifying the criminal code so that those who suffer from an incurable disease which causes considerable physical and/or mental pain, and which deprives a person of their human dignity, should be permitted to resort to euthanasia.

Momentum MP Dávid Bedő noted that the government’s position is clear, but said it is important that a social dialogue be started on the subject.

Momentum believes that human freedom and dignity are important and it believes that a person should be able to make end-of-life decisions freely.

If the NVI approves the proposed referendum questions then supporters will have to collect 200,000 signatures in favour of holding a referendum on the issues.

Momentum trusts that a referendum can be held on the two questions simultaneously with the European Parliament and local elections on June 9.

Dialogue-Greens co-president Rebeka Szabó also attended the press conference to say that her party agrees with Karsai’s proposal, and supports the idea of making active euthanasia legal in Hungary, in the case of incurable and fatal diseases.

The Dialogue party has initiated a day of debate in Parliament on the issue on February 21.
