Second Hottest August on Record in Hungary
Last month was the second warmest August since records began in 1901, according to the national meteorological office.

The national average temperature for the month was 24.53°C, just 0.01°C short of August 1992’s record.

This summer has been exceptionally warm, with June and July also ranking among the hottest months on record.

Temperatures initially dipped below average in early August but rose steadily to around 27.5°C by mid-month.

After peaking, temperatures fell closer to the average before warming again, with August 31 being 7°C above the norm.

High school sends students home due to extreme heat

Students at Budapest’s Leovey Klara Gymnasium were sent home early on Wednesday due to excessive heat in the classrooms, Magyar Hang reports.

Temperatures reached 34-35C in many classrooms, and were as high as 39C on the upper floors.

Students’ phones, which had been stored in a communal locker, were returned so that the students could contact their parents.

Education researcher Janos Setenyi spoke of the need for the education system to adapt to climate change considering these conditions.
