Austrian Border Closures Thwart Commuters & Xmas Shoppers from Hungary
A road connecting Sopron in Hungary to Burgenland via Klingenbach and Siegendorf has been blocked with a concrete barrier to curb traffic from Hungarian commuters.

This follows the closure of the Ágfalva-Schattendorf crossing nearly two years ago, as the town of Klingenbach sought relief from increasing congestion.

The immediate impact has been severe, with worsening morning traffic jams at Sopron’s border crossing, Telex reports.

Thousands of commuters continue seeking alternative routes, heightening concerns that other Austrian border communities may follow suit.

Austria has maintained "temporary" border controls with Hungary since 2015, prompting legal challenges.

However, a legal complaint against Austria’s border practices was recently dismissed, with the court ruling the measures “not entirely unlawful”.
