“This is a temporary measure introduced due to the increased threat of terrorism to ensure a high level of security for all citizens,” the Slovenian Government Communication Office (UKOM) said.
They added that the police will continue to carry out border controls in a way that does not have a negative impact on travelers, the economy, and the border population.
Slovenia reintroduced temporary border controls on October 21 last year, after Italy announced a similar measure on its own border with Slovenia. The measure has been extended several times since then.
The Ljubljana government has said it will inform the other EU Member States, the European Commission, and the European Parliament of the extension of border controls in accordance with Article 27 of the Schengen Borders Code.
Slovenia has set up 14 checkpoints on the Croatian and Hungarian borders- 12 on the Croatian side, and two on the Hungarian side.
EU citizens can use all border crossing points, while third-country nationals can only cross the border at these 14 points.
Note - all this may add delays at the border, currently on 15 or so minutes but longer can be expected at peak times.
Remember - if you are an expat resident in Hungary, when travelling abroad it's recommended to take your Hungarian residency card with you for smooth passage at boarder check-points.
