Memories of Roma Murders by Hungarian Neo-Nazis in 2008-09 Evoked by Budapest Mayor to Protect Rights of All
- 24 Feb 2025 7:17 AM

The mayor evoked memories of the murders, committed by neo-Nazis in central Hungarian villages, in which six people died and several others were injured. In one instance the perpetrators set fire to a house and shot a father and his children running out of the building, "in cold blood ... from ambush."
"Nobody can curb the freedoms of others without curbing his own freedom. When everybody is treated equally, when everybody's dignity, faith, convictions and orientation are respected - that is freedom," he said.
"The Roma must be members of the nation and the community of our city with equal rights and equally appreciated as others," the mayor said.
Meanwhile Karacsony: Kyiv mayor receives Pawel Adamowicz Award from European Committee of Regions
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has been awarded the Mayor Pawel Adamowicz Award of the European Committee of Regions, handed over by Kata Tutto, the recently elected president of the committee, Budapest Mayor Gergely Karacsony said.
The award named after the mayor of Gdansk murdered in 2019 is given to politicians in local politics who stand up for freedom, solidarity and equality, Karacsony said on Facebook.
"With its three-year freedom fight, Ukraine is protecting the whole of Europe as well as itself. The ideals holding Europe together: freedom, dignity and democracy. Ukraine has done far more for us than we have done for Ukraine," Karacsony said.
"Standing by Ukraine is a matter of principle, not of calculation," Karacsony added.
