The project, titled “Development of the RDI Ecosystem,” is supported by the Hungarian government and co-financed by the European Union.
The official launch event, held at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) on February 6, brought together key stakeholders from the scientific and business communities.
The event also recognized outstanding Hungarian research institutions with international significance.
Strengthening Research Infrastructure
In his keynote address, Péter Domokos, president of the Research Excellence Council, emphasized the importance of research infrastructures as incubators for economic and social progress.
“People are the key to every process,” added László Lengyel, vice president for science and international affairs at Hungary’s National Research, Development, and Innovation (NRDI) Office. He highlighted the agency’s recently approved funding portfolio, which prioritizes the development of research talent, support for international-quality research, and the integration of young scientists, PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers.
Györgyi Juhász, infrastructure coordinator at the NRDI Office, underscored the importance of collaboration with major international research infrastructures, which are essential for tackling global challenges.
The agency invests over HUF 10 billion annually to ensure Hungarian researchers have access to world-class research facilities, including the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland and the Biobanking and Biomolecular Research Infrastructure (BBMRI-ERIC).
Project Goals and Research Recognition
Péter Racskó, head of strategy and monitoring at the NRDI Office, detailed the project’s objectives, which include fostering innovation, encouraging research-based economic partnerships, and optimizing Hungary’s use of research infrastructure.
László Nemes, an expert at the NRDI Office, noted that Hungary first mapped its top research infrastructures in 2021 and began assessing their progress in 2024.
BME professor János Levendovszky presented best practices for collaboration between university research centers and businesses.
Following the presentations, Lengyel and Zsolt Fülöp, president of the National Research Infrastructure Committee, awarded certificates to 61 Hungarian research institutions. Including those recognized in 2021, Hungary now has 111 accredited research infrastructures.
The project will run until June 2029, with full EU funding covering its costs.
