Pentecost Heritage Festival, Szentendre Skanzen, 8 - 9 June
- 2 Jun 2025 3:28 PM

According to organisers, the festival is not just about observing – it’s about active participation. More than 55 tradition-preserving communities will take part, offering a vibrant and immersive experience for all ages.
This 14th edition highlights living traditions passed down through generations, with particular emphasis on dance and folk rituals.
One of the key attractions is the revival of the Pentecost "queen-walking" (királyné-járás), an old Hungarian custom featuring young girls in traditional attire reenacting local variations of this once widespread ritual. Based on early 20th-century descriptions, the custom differs across regions—from ornate bridal-like processions in the Great Plain to canopy-covered flower girls in Transdanubia.
Throughout the weekend, over 300 dancers and musicians will perform live, including children’s folk dance groups, and there will be a community dance each afternoon where everyone is welcome to join in the Hungarian Csárdás. In all, 18 folk dance ensembles will be on hand to perform and teach.
Beyond the performances, guests can also enjoy demonstrations of falconry, gold embroidery from Deszk, Pentecostal church decorations from Mende and Maglód, and Kalocsa folk art. For those eager to get hands-on, workshops in traditional crafts, games, embroidery, and regional cuisine will be available across the museum’s various country houses.
The event offers a unique chance to learn about and take part in Hungarian heritage in a truly authentic setting.
