Why Debrecen Has Been Shortlisted in European Green Capital Competition
- 14 Jul 2025 9:52 AM
Next to Debrecen, the finalists for the European Green Capital title awarded to cities with populations above 100,000 are Heilbronn in Germany and Klagenfurt in Austria.
The European Commission said Debrecen lead the way in sustainability, achieving the highest score among the finalists competing for the title.
"The Hungarian city excels in biodiversity, green areas and sustainable land use, as well as in waste management and the circular economy. Debrecen has enhanced its urban environment through increasing green spaces by 16 percent and planting thousands of trees to improve the city’s microclimate," it added.
The winners will be announced in this year’s European Green Capital, Vilnius, at a festive ceremony on October 2.
