Free Classical Concerts: 'Music Harvest' Festival in Pécs, 11 - 14 September
- 26 Aug 2025 12:06 PM
Organist Szabolcs Szamosi, managing director of the organizer Filharmónia, said that although the Music Harvest festival, which looks back on a decade and a half of history, has undergone many changes, its fundamental goals have not changed over time: they strive to bring classical music closer to the audience in the most colorful form possible.
As he said, the audience will be treated to a major concert on each of the four days of the event, and a different musical genre will be the focus each day.
Artistic director Erika Miklósa herself will take part in the performers' work, as the audience will be able to see her in a different role every day alongside singers such as - among others - Vera Tóth and Csaba Vastag, she highlighted.
On the first day, Thursday, September 11, pianist János Balázs will give a concert in the Rose Garden next to the Pécs Cathedral, the second half of which will feature a chamber opera by Péter Wolf, who also wrote the music for Vuk.
In this work, the subject of the tale is history, as the protagonist is Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart's later librettist, who gets involved in a love triangle at a Venetian carnival. During the evening, Erika Miklósa, Gergely Boncsér, Viktória Mester and András Hábetler will sing accompanied by the Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra.
During the day, in the morning, in the program titled Mozart and the Muses, visitors can immerse themselves in the relationship between the creative process and private life, led by Erika Miklósa, and in the afternoon, in the program titled MÜSZI-tér, students from the music, fine arts, and dance-drama departments of the Pécs High School of Arts and Vocational High School will present a program based partly on improvisation.
The second day will focus on the connection between classical and film music, so there will be classic street music in various parts of the city, and in the evening, Hungarian film hits will be performed on the main stage in Dóm Square by the Budapest Jazz Orchestra, Erika Miklósa, Vera Tóth and Csaba Vastag.
There will also be a film screening at the Tettye ruins, where you can watch the short film Mindenki and the documentary Várdai - non solo cello.
On Saturday, in the spirit of bel canto, anyone will have the opportunity to take a look into the lives of professional musicians. At the concert held at the Kodály Center, the musicians of the Savaria Symphony Orchestra and Erika Miklósa and her students from the KvintEssence Master School will perform works by Rossini, Verdi and Donizetti.
During the day, there will be a musical tour in the zoo in the morning, classical street music will be available in the city center this afternoon, and in the evening, parallel to the concert, a musical monodrama performance titled "The Double Bass" will offer a theatrical experience in which we can look into the lives of musicians at the Tettyé.
On Sunday, folk music and folk traditions will form the backbone of the programs, and the dancing will begin in the morning: young children will be welcomed by Laposa Julcsi on Tettye Square, at noon the winner of the Balatonfüred prima competition will perform in the Rózsakert, and in the afternoon hundreds of us can dance around the cathedral with children and dancers.
The festival will close in the evening on Dóm Square with a concert by Erika Miklósa, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble and its prima, Szalonna István Pál and Eszter Pál. Parallel to the concert, there will also be a film screening on this day, at the Tettye ruins.
Most of the programs of the Music Harvest are free.
