Taxis in Budapest Disrupt Traffic & Hold Protest
Hundreds of taxi drivers have been demonstrating for better work conditions near Budapest's City Hall and Heroes' Square since Wednesday morning.

Trade associations have been in talks with the City Council for almost a year, Norbert Vaczi of Budapest Taxi Drivers Association said.

They requested a fare increase and an annual automatic correction as well as a freeze of the number of taxi drivers and the elimination of illegal passenger transport.

The Budapest City Council is expected to discuss an amendment to the decree on taxi drivers on Wednesday, but this does not include the requests of taxi drivers, only provisions that would make their working conditions more difficult, he said.

The taxi drivers' organisation demands a withdrawal of the proposal and the start of substantive negotiations, he said, adding that their representatives would personally participate in Wednesday's session of the Budapest assembly.

Meanwhile, the police have begun taking measures against taxi drivers who are slowing traffic on Margaret Bridge as well as on Andrassy Avenue, the Budapest Police Headquarters told MTI.

According to the police, two taxis were removed from Andrássy Avenue so far, and a violation report has been filed against their drivers. On Margaret Bridge, a violation report has been filed against eight taxi drivers, and on-the-spot fines have been imposed in six cases.
