Budapest Parking Innovation: 'Kiss & Ride' Zones & Dedicated Food Courier Waiting Areas
The Corvin Quarter and Újpest district have recently received some lesser-known but highly practical upgrades: BKK, as part of the EU-funded GRETA project, has introduced the first short-term parking bays, limited to a maximum of 30 minutes, specifically designed for quick errands.

In District VIII, several new loading zones have been created, and dedicated waiting areas have been set up for bicycle food couriers. Additionally, Corvin Promenade has been officially designated as a pedestrian and cyclist zone. Simultaneously, similar project elements have been deployed across multiple locations in District IV, North Pest.

The goal of the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) and the Municipality of Budapest is to transition the city’s parking and delivery systems towards a more sustainable operational model. The GRETA (Greening Regional Freight Transport in Functional Urban Areas) research and development project offers solutions to city logistics challenges typically faced by large metropolitan areas.

The GRETA project began in Budapest some time ago, and the recent interventions in the Corvin Quarter and Újpest are designed to simultaneously assist local residents, support business operations, streamline courier work, and enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

New Order in Corvin Quarter, Pilot Project in Újpest

In the busy streets of the Corvin Quarter, illegal parking and loading were common, often obstructing traffic and reducing the quality of public spaces. To address this, several new loading zones have been established in the area, Corvin Promenade has been formally designated as a pedestrian-cyclist zone, and separate waiting areas have been created for bicycle food couriers.

These changes aim to better regulate deliveries and courier traffic, while also providing a safer environment for those travelling on foot or by bike.

As part of the project: two loading zones created in spring 2024 have been supplemented with seven more locations on Vajdahunyad, Futó, Tömő, Bókay, Lósy, and Práter Streets; short-term waiting bays have appeared on Futó, Nagy Templom, Bókay, and Leonardo da Vinci Streets; and segregated parking spaces have been provided for bicycle food couriers (on a trial basis) near the Vajdahunyad Street entrance of the plaza, offering an organised place to await orders for delivery from the mall. Note that motor vehicles are strictly prohibited from parking in these courier zones.

Interventions also took place in Újpest: a new loading zone was created on Templom Street, a 'Kiss and Ride' (K+R) drop-off point was established on Árpád Road, a new area was marked out for residential waste containers, a micromobility point (for scooters or bikes) was expanded, and bollards were installed to prevent illegal parking.

Sustainable Urban Logistics, a More Organised Budapest

The GRETA project has developed a methodology to help plan and regulate activities occurring along public space edges—the so-called 'curbside zones'. This includes parking, loading, courier services, and similar activities.

The objective is to ensure these processes operate according to transparent, predetermined rules. This not only makes the area more liveable but also reduces conflicts arising from illegal waiting and promotes environmentally friendly transport options, such as cargo-bike delivery. The project runs until March 2026, aiming to make Budapest’s public spaces more organised and safer for everyone.
