Official: Tainted & Dangerous Spices on Many Shop Shelves in Hungary
- 7 Oct 2025 12:32 PM
More than 46 percent of the oregano samples tested proved to be problematic, with 4 out of 15 oregano samples containing foreign plant material averaging 70-80 percent, the authority said in a statement on Tuesday.
Inspections covered products in brick-and-mortar and online shops as well as spices sold in bulk in oriental and package-free stores.
The statement noted that between 2019 and 2021 the European Commission and 21 EU member states, plus Switzerland and Norway, conducted a similar probe which revealed that oregano is the most counterfeited spice.
Nearly half of the samples contained foreign plant material -- typically olive or myrtle leaves.
