Budapest Citadel Lookout to Open Sooner than Expected with Expanded Green Spaces

Previously accessible through only one entrance, the fortress has now been opened at three points. By cutting through walls and creating spectacular staircases, the building complex will become far more welcoming and easy to explore. Newly added terraces will offer visitors breathtaking panoramic views of Budapest.
Within the fortress walls, a 6,000-square-meter public park is taking shape, designed with environmental awareness and self-sustainability in mind. Beyond the fortress, green space will expand to 20,000 square meters — one and a half times its current size—with rare plants and carefully preserved natural features.
Throughout the renovation, experts are balancing heritage preservation with the integration of modern 21st-century technologies.
A staircase built into the main wall behind the Liberty Statue will improve access, while the western cannon tower will host a 1,700-square-meter, multi-level exhibition titled “Bastion of Freedom”, celebrating Hungary’s historic struggles for freedom. Unique architectural elements — including a glass footbridge, an artificial inner courtyard water feature, and an eternal flame — enhance the visitor experience.
Modern amenities such as a lift, barrier-free entrances, and community rooms will improve accessibility and comfort. Visitors can also enjoy a restaurant and gift shop. In the evenings, renewed decorative lighting will highlight the Citadel and Liberty Statue, reinforcing their iconic presence on the Budapest skyline.
The final phase of the reconstruction, along with further details and fascinating facts about the lookout point, will be shared on the Citadel’s new official social media channels, launching soon.
