With the act, the government aimed to establish a legal framework for the safe, transparent and responsible use of AI, Szabolcs Szolnoki, the deputy state secretary for technology, said in the statement.

In addition to implementing the European Union directive on AI, the act effectively ensures the protection of Hungarian businesses and users of AI.

The legislation was drafted parallel with the government's new AI strategy, approved in September, and aims to ensure that Hungarians and local SMEs all benefit from the technological advance.

The act establishes a Hungarian AI Council, headed by the government commissioner for AI, that will develop guidelines and help draft unified legislation, while tracking technological developments and regulatory practices.

The council will operate as a broad forum for consultation among local parties affected by AI, in the research, business and social sectors.
