Events in Venezuela Could Be Favourable for Hungary from Energy Perspective, Says Orbán
- 5 Jan 2026 3:33 PM
Orban called the events over the weekend a "powerful proclamation of the new world" and said the United States, together with Venezuela, now controlled 40-50pc of global oil reserves and could have a strong influence on prices.
"We expect the Americans will need cheap energy for the economic programme announced by the president," he said. "That's good news for Hungary," he added.
Orban: No Hungarian citizen affected or injured in military action in Venezuela
No Hungarian citizen has been affected or injured in the military action in Venezuela, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Facebook late on Saturday.
The government is in constant contact with ambassadors in the region to ensure that no Hungarian gets in trouble in Venezuela, the prime minister added.
"Today, we also discussed with the most important players in Hungary's energy sector ways to prevent the price-raising effects of the crisis in Venezuela. The Hungarian government is at work," Orban concluded his post.
Szijjarto: No Hungarian citizens harmed during US operation in Caracas
No Hungarian citizens were harmed during the events involving US operations in Caracas, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Saturday.
A single Hungarian citizen in the Venezuelan capital who is registered for consular protection has been contacted and they are well, Szijjarto said on Facebook.
"We are aware of two Hungarian citizens who are in prison in Venezuela, one of them in a rural location that was not affected, and the other in the capital, but that area was also not affected by the events," he added.
If there are any Hungarian citizens in Venezuela who have not registered for consular protection, they can contact the Hungarian honorary consul in Caracas or the Dutch consulate representing Hungarian interests in case of trouble, he said. Hungary's embassy in Quito is on call around the clock, he added.
Boka: EU foreign policy 'in grave crisis'
The statement of Kaja Kallas, the European Union's high representative for foreign and security affairs, on the situation in Venezuela has shown that the EU's common foreign policy "is in grave crisis," Janos Boka, the EU affairs minister, said on Facebook.
"Beyond voicing certain wishes, the EU has nothing to say about the situation or the region, and it is unable to articulate its regional interest in a new era of world powers' politics," Boka said. He said the EU had so far lacked the means to become "a consequential player", and no change was to be expected on that front.
The statement was a "sign of weakness and of a full misinterpretation of international relations", he said, adding that the EU should refrain from issuing such statements if it was looking to become a global player.
Meanwhile, "Hungary's government is doing its job: it is doing everything it can to ensure the safety of Hungarian citizens in Venezuela and to ensure Hungary's energy supplies; it also continues to monitor the situation closely," Boka said.
