Cooking Oil Price Hike in Hungary Triggers Official Investigation

GVH said there is a significant difference between the general price level and food prices, which is difficult to justify with domestic development or other macroeconomic factors. Within the food product group, the highest price level is experienced among oils and fats, which also includes cooking oil.
Here domestic prices exceed the EU average by nearly 10pc and the regional average by 16pc, according to Eurostat data.
The domestic consumer price of cooking oil increased by 15.8pc in euros between December 2024 and the autumn months of 2025. In comparison, the average price in the other three Visegrad countries was 9.7pc in the same period, GVH added.
According to data from the Central Statistics Office (KSH) per capita consumption of cooking oil in Hungary is around 10-12 litres per year. Consumer demand for sunflower cooking oil and oilseeds used as raw materials is mostly met by domestic players, and to a lesser extent by foreign imports, the latter accounting for around 10-20pc.
GVH noted that it is cooperating closely with the National Bank of Hungary (NBH) and they are jointly investigating the pricing practices of certain foodstuffs.
