Discover the Healing Power of Floral Design at This Unique Exhibit in Budapest
Running until 29 November, the Hungarian Heritage House presents a captivating new exhibition titled Tulip and Sage – Gardens, Eras, Folk Art. Located in the Kallós Zoltán Exhibition Hall, this showcase delves into five centuries of tradition, tracing how the shifting beauty of the garden and the human bond with the land have defined Hungary’s decorative history.

Curated by Dr. Szilvia Czingel, along with Krisztina Üveges and Emőke Nánássy, the exhibition is designed as a sensory journey. It highlights the floral motifs that have historically adorned village homes, from intricate embroidery and folk costumes to painted furniture and ceramics.

With over 120 original artifacts on display, visitors can see firsthand how natural forms — like the namesake tulip and sage — inspired generations of local artisans.

A "Healing Museum" Experience

Tulip and Sage is intentionally designed to be more than a static display of objects; it is an invitation to slow down. Embracing the concept of a "healing museum," the exhibition focuses on how the harmony, rhythm, and repetition found in traditional designs can provide a sense of calm.

Drawing on Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s philosophy of returning to nature, the curators reflect on gardens not just as sources of artistic patterns, but as sanctuaries for mental renewal. The floral designs here are deeply narrative, telling stories of community, belief, and the seasonal rhythms that once dictated life in the Hungarian countryside.
