Roll Out of New Pay&GO Validators Started on Budapest Metro System
Budapest's Public Transport Authority, BKK, will begin installing new Pay&GO ticket‑validation devices on the metro network from 12 March, a process expected to take four weeks, according to BKK.

The system will allow passengers to purchase and validate a ticket in one step by tapping a bank card or smart device, eliminating the need for registration, an app, or paper tickets. Inspectors will be able to verify travel rights directly through the Pay&GO system.

The new validators will first appear on the M2 line, followed by M4 and M3, with 2–5 devices installed per station, while existing paper‑ticket validators will remain available.

Between March 9 and April 1, older NFC readers used for validating BudapestGO app tickets will be removed.

The pilot currently supports single‑ticket purchases, but the full Pay&GO service planned in later phases will include passes, discounts, and spending limits, and is expected to expand across the entire Budapest and suburban transit network from 2028.
