Spring in Hungary: Ice Cream Season Kicks Off with Tricolor Treats at Lake Balaton
- 16 Mar 2026 1:13 PM
To celebrate the March 15 national holiday, artisanal confectioneries across both the northern and southern shores are throwing open their doors, with many offering special "tricolour" treats in the national colours of red, white, and green.
According to Tamás Fekete, President of the Balaton Tourism Association, these early spring openings are becoming a vital draw for the region, proving that the "Hungarian Sea" is a year-round destination for foodies and families alike.
Where to Find the First Scoops
From Balatonfüred to Balatongyörök, the lake’s most famous parlours are ready for the crowds:
* Tihany: The legendary Erzsike Ice Cream Parlor is maintaining its 30-year tradition of opening on March 15, rain or shine. Look out for their patriotic combinations using strawberry, mascarpone, and pistachio.
* Balatonfüred: The well-known Bagaméri Ice Cream Shop is launching with holiday specials.
* Balatonalmádi: The Amaretto Ice Cream Parlor reports that the first sunny weekends have already brought a "summery atmosphere" to the shore, with counters already fully stocked.
* Balatonlelle: On the southern shore, Márton Confectionery is the go-to spot for those kicking off the season.
Award-Winning Quality
The quality of Hungarian artisanal ice cream continues to gain international prestige. Recently, the Sissi Ice Cream Parlor returned from a prestigious competition in Italy with the "Master of Quality Award" from the Association of Italian Ice Cream Makers’ Instructors.
In Balatongyörök, the Promenád Café — famous for its "Vatican" ice cream—is preparing unique specialities that are rarely found elsewhere in the country, ensuring that the 2026 season starts with plenty of innovation.
A Festive Twist
In honour of the March 15 revolution, many shops are getting creative with their displays. You can expect to see "National Colour" sundaes featuring:
Red: Strawberry, raspberry, or wild berries.
White: Lemon, yogurt, or elderflower.
Green: Green apple, pistachio, or mint.
