Magyar Pledges First Official Visit to Warsaw to Rebuild Ties
- 14 Apr 2026 1:06 PM
In response to a question from a Polish news channel, Magyar said he could travel to Warsaw in early May and he also hoped to visit Gdansk.
Hungary and Poland shared a special bond of deep friendship and alliance, he said, but accused the outgoing prime minister, Viktor Orban, of "largely destroying" bilateral relations by serving Russian interests and acting on "personal animosity". "We will now rebuild this," he promised.
Asked about the extradition of two Polish politicians -- former justice minister Zbigniew Ziobro and his deputy Marcin Romanowski, both granted asylum in Hungary - Magyar said they would "find a way" to hand them over to Poland. He noted this would also apply to former Macedonian prime minister Nikola Gruevski, who likewise received asylum in Hungary.
"Hungary will not be a haven for internationally wanted criminals," he said. "And we expect other European countries to do the same: if, God forbid, Hungarian criminals, even if they are politicians, flee abroad, they must be extradited to Hungary in accordance with international law."
Election 2026 - Tusk predicts 'exceptional' Hungary-Poland ties
Ties between Poland and Hungary will be "exceptional", Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said early on Monday, reacting to the results of Hungary's general election.
During a visit to South Korea, Tusk said he had phoned Tisza Party leader Peter Magyar and congratulated him on his election victory and he noted they discussed Magyar's planned visit to Warsaw.
"I think our ties will be absolutely exceptional," the Polish PM said.
Election 2026 - Nawrocki: Result 'sovereign will of Hungarian people'
The outcome of Hungary's general election is the "sovereign will of the Hungarian people", Polish President Karol Nawrocki said on Monday, adding that Poland and Hungary's thousand-year-old friendship must endure.
Speaking to commercial news channel Polsat News, Nawrocki congratulated Peter Magyar on his victory.
"The Hungarian people have elected their prime minister, whom I congratulate... The thousand-year-old friendship between our nations transcends parliamentary elections," he said, underlining that it was not his role to comment on the election.
"As president, I will work with anyone freely elected by another nation, in Poland’s interest," he said.
