New Danube Bridge Project: Roadwork on Schedule in Hungary
The construction of the extensive road infrastructure connecting to the new Mohács Danube Bridge is proceeding exactly as planned, with several key milestones approaching. During a recent press conference in southwest Hungary, József Pántya, Deputy State Secretary at the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, confirmed that the project has reached 35% completion overall.

Infrastructure & Connectivity

The ambitious project, which began 553 days ago, involves more than just a crossing; it includes nearly 30 kilometers of new road networks.

The Western Link: A 6 km section of four-lane road connecting the M6 motorway to the "Busó" roundabout in Mohács is nearing completion. It is expected to be opened to traffic by the end of April 2026.

The Eastern Link: On the opposite bank, construction has begun on a 20 km stretch of 2x2 lane road (Main Road 51) toward the Serbian border. This section will feature "turbo" roundabouts and wildlife crossings to ensure safe and modern transit.

Engineering the Bridge

The bridge itself, a 756-meter steel-framed structure designed by Gábor Pál, is currently 33% complete.

Innovative Technique: Using a specialized sliding technology, steel bridge elements are being pre-assembled on both banks and will be pushed into place over the riverbed.

Capacity: The crossing will feature four vehicle lanes and a two-way bicycle path on the southern side, finally ending the region's reliance on ferry transport.

Economic and Historical Significance

The investment, estimated at over €1 billion (approx. HUF 300-320 billion), is funded entirely by the Hungarian state. It aims to revitalize the Bácska region, which has long been economically isolated.

By providing a fixed link between the Great Plain and Transdanubia, the bridge will turn Mohács into a critical transit hub for international trade between Hungary, Serbia, and Croatia.

The project is strategically timed to coincide with the "Mohács 500" memorial year. While the bridge is scheduled for a final handover in 2028, the surrounding regional developments—including a renewed town square and expanded tourism infrastructure — are designed to honor the 500th anniversary of the historic 1526 Battle of Mohács
