Magyar to Stay in Own Home, Rejects Official Budapest Residence & Luxury Car
Hungary’s new PM says he will not move into the official prime ministerial residence, and will instead remain in his current Budapest home, explaining his decision is connected to his children.

In a Facebook post published on Wednesday, Magyar wrote: “I am staying in the house my children feel at home in,” signalling what many see as an attempt to distance his government from the style and symbolism of the previous administration.

He also confirmed that he will continue using the blue Škoda Superb that became familiar during his nationwide campaign tour, rather than switching to a newly assigned luxury government vehicle.

Hungarian media noted the contrast with former prime minister Viktor Orbán, whose official fleet included high-end armoured BMW vehicles reportedly worth hundreds of millions of forints.

According to Magyar, the Prime Minister’s Office and future cabinet meetings will be based at 5 Alkotmány Street, close to the Hungarian Parliament building in central Budapest. The property previously housed Hungary’s Ministry of Construction and Transport.

The move is also symbolically significant. Earlier this spring, Magyar announced that his government would not continue operating from the Carmelite Monastery in Budapest’s Castle District, which had served as Orbán’s headquarters since 2019.

Critics often viewed the official Buda Castle location as a symbol of political distance and centralised power in Hungary.

Recent photos shared by the new PM showed the future cabinet meeting room inside the Alkotmány Street building ahead of the new government’s first formal sessions.

Since taking office after 16 years of Fidesz-led government, the new administration has repeatedly stressed themes of transparency, institutional reform and reducing political privilege.
