New Survey: 2/3 of Hungarians Would Put Orbán on Trial Now
A newly published survey by Medián, one of Hungary’s most respected polling companies and among the few to closely predict the outcome of the recent parliamentary election, points to major shifts in the country’s political landscape.

The poll, commissioned by HVG and conducted between 27 April and 2 May, indicates both a substantial increase in support for the Tisza Party and growing public backing for possible legal proceedings against former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán over actions linked to his years in office.

The research examined party preferences as well as public perceptions of Orbán and Péter Magyar. According to the findings, the Tisza Party has significantly widened its lead over Fidesz, particularly among committed voters.

Among decided voters, support for Tisza reached 70%, while Fidesz stood at 23%. Across the overall population, the opposition party also maintained a clear advantage.

Respondents were also asked whether they believed Orbán should face legal accountability for alleged wrongdoing during his time in power. Around 65% said they believed he may have committed offences serious enough to justify court proceedings.

At the same time, 28% said that while Orbán bears political responsibility for what happened during his years in government, they would not support criminal prosecution. The remaining respondents either said they did not know or declined to answer.

One of the more notable findings was that support for a legal investigation extended beyond opposition voters. Nearly nine out of ten Tisza supporters said they would support court proceedings against Orbán, but even among Fidesz voters, 12% believed his actions should be examined from a legal perspective — a figure rarely seen in previous surveys.

The poll also suggested that Orbán’s personal approval ratings have weakened considerably. Only 39% of respondents now believe he was suitable for the role of prime minister, while 59% said they were dissatisfied with his performance in retrospect.

By contrast, Péter Magyar continues to receive significantly more positive ratings. According to the survey, 72% of respondents believe he would be suitable to serve as prime minister. Although this represents a slight decline from his immediate post-election peak, it remains well above his pre-campaign support levels.

Medián also asked participants whether they believed Hungary was heading in the right or wrong direction. Some 63% said the country is currently moving in the right direction, compared with just 33% who gave the same response in the institute’s final poll before the 12 April election.

Péter Magyar also reacted publicly to the latest figures. In a Facebook post published on Wednesday afternoon, he described the results as unprecedented.

“There are no words. TISZA 70%, Fidesz 23%. Numbers never seen before, responsibility never seen before,” he wrote.

Magyar also suggested that Hungary is entering a new political era, adding that “the real service” would begin on 9 May, the day the new parliament is scheduled to be formed.
