Cheap Petrol Price Promise Evaporated? Opposition Challenge New Prime Minister in Hungary
- 18 May 2026 1:35 PM
In a video posted on Facebook, Bence Retvari said when fuel prices exploded on the world market, the Fidesz-KDNP government immediately introduced a 595 forint "protected price" and Hungarian filling stations charged that very amount the following day.
The Tisza government, by contrast, had failed to agree on a petrol price of 480 forints at its first meeting, he said. "It turns out that Peter Magyar deceived voters and this was just a bluff on his part."
At Wednesday's press conference during a break of the first government meeting, Magyar suggested to those asking about the 480 forint petrol price that they should check how much the world market price of crude oil was when he spoke about this during the campaign and how much it is now.
