Night of Movement at Heroes Square Budapest, 12 June
- 12 Jun 2026 11:27 AM
On Friday, 12 June, the Night of Movement returns, bringing programmes to squares, parks, sports facilities and community spaces across the country. Now in its expanded format, the event is expected to involve participants in almost 90 Hungarian towns and cities, reflecting how significantly it has grown in recent years.
Although the scale has changed, the underlying idea remains straightforward: encouraging people to see physical activity not as obligation or performance, but as something social, accessible and enjoyable.
Budapest once again serves as the central location, with Heroes’ Square and City Park hosting the capital’s main programme.
Organisers expect tens of thousands of participants over the course of the evening, while thousands more are expected to take part simultaneously elsewhere in Hungary and in Hungarian communities beyond the country’s borders.
According to Gergely Kiss, communications director of the Great Sports Selection programme, the event was originally created to show that sport does not need to be confined to daytime schedules or competitive environments.
He noted that exercising alongside large groups in an evening setting creates an atmosphere that feels distinctly different from conventional sporting events.
The programme has expanded considerably since its early years. More than 80 participating locations now offer opportunities to try multiple activities, with some venues hosting eight to ten different sports.
A key principle of Night of Movement continues to be accessibility. The emphasis is not on competition or athletic performance but on encouraging participation regardless of experience or fitness level.
In Budapest, activities begin from midday at the Dagály Swimming Pool with swimming events connected to modern pentathlon. Later in the day, the focus shifts to Heroes’ Square and City Park, where visitors can choose from nearly thirty different activities.
Programmes include spinning, yoga, climbing, footvolley, jump rope, roller skating, running and cycling, alongside a range of additional movement-based activities.
The event’s reach has also extended beyond Hungary itself. This year, six Hungarian communities in Transylvania are joining the programme, adding an international dimension to what began as a Budapest initiative.
Alongside the capital, participating locations include Zalaegerszeg, Kaposvár, Békéscsaba, Salgótarján, Baja, Mosonmagyaróvár, Jászberény, Pécs, Győr, Kecskemét, Eger, Veszprém and Székesfehérvár, as well as locations across the border including Cluj-Napoca and Sfântu Gheorghe.
Participation is free at all venues. Organisers recommend registering in advance to make it easier to navigate activities and manage attendance across the different locations.
