Running until 31 August 2026, GYURIII! at the New City Hall Gallery offers a very colourful journey through more than seven decades of work by the 90-year-old artist whose posters, illustrations and graphic designs helped shape Budapest's visual identity.

Visitors will find reproductions of Kemény's paintings, posters, drawings, sculptures and digital works, tracing his evolution from the bold pop-art aesthetic of the 1960s through to his later abstract digital creations. 

Although the exhibition features high-quality reproductions rather than original artworks, the vivid colours and striking visual language lose little of their impact.

Kemény became internationally recognised for his distinctive poster designs, winning awards in Warsaw and Japan while also receiving Hungary's prestigious Munkácsy Prize. 

His work brought a burst of colour and humour into everyday life during the socialist era, blending Western pop-art influences with uniquely Hungarian themes.

Perhaps the exhibition's biggest surprise is the recreation of the legendary room painted for writer and later politician Ferenc Kőszeg in 1970-71. 

The original apartment featured psychedelic comic-strip murals that were coloured in collectively by participants attending underground Marxist discussion groups during the communist period. 

Recreated inside the gallery, the immersive installation transports visitors into one of Budapest's most fascinating pieces of alternative cultural history.

The exhibition is arranged chronologically, beginning with Kemény's vibrant advertising posters, theatre and film graphics, and famous album covers - including artwork created for the Hungarian rock band LGT. 

It then moves through his monochrome drawings, surrealist works and later digital experiments, providing an accessible overview of one of Hungary's most inventive visual artists.

One of the gallery's biggest advantages is its location. Housed beside Budapest City Hall, it remains relatively unknown to many despite being right in the city centre. 

Admission is free, making it a great cultural stop near the central Budapest hub of Deák Ferenc tér.

For anyone interested in graphic design, pop art or Budapest's cultural history, GYURIII! offers an engaging look at an artist whose colourful imagination left a lasting mark on the city's visual landscape - and remains every bit as fresh today.
