Free Entry: French Institute's Annual Street Ball in Budapest on 11 July
French chanson, African drum rhythms, Moroccan world music, street games, and culinary specialties await visitors on 11 July at the French Institute’s traditional Street Ball here. Organised to celebrate the French National Day in Hungary, this free event will once again transform the Danube riverbank into an all-day cultural festival.

For years, the French Institute in Budapest has marked the national holiday in a unique way: instead of formal ceremonies, it fills the square in front of its building with music, dance, and shared community experiences.

This year’s Street Ball continues this tradition, placing diversity at its heart, where French culture meets the traditions of other Francophone countries.

Afternoon programme begins at 5:00 pm.

Via the Tesz-Vesz Youth and Children’s Foundation from Szolnok, visitors can try out traditional French and European wooden games, while Congolese percussionist Acacia Mpofo and saxophonist Dacian Dumitru Cărpaci set the mood with mini concerts.

Acacia Mpofo will also lead interactive workshops open to all ages. Participants can explore percussion instruments while embarking on a unique cultural journey through the rhythms, dances, and musical traditions of Francophone Africa. These sessions focus on the joy of making music together and the power of cultural exchange.

Evening concert programme opens with Marion Roch.

The young French singer-songwriter is known for her emotional performances, blending French chanson with folk and rock influences. Her songs are both personal and universal, and her concerts create an intimate connection with the audience.

She will be followed by the Moroccan-Hungarian Saïd Chalaban band, which combines gnawa, shaâbi, and Hassani musical traditions with elements of dub, funk, and psychedelic rock. Led by Saïd Tichiti, who has been active in Hungary for over two decades, the group has become a defining presence on the local world music scene.

Street Ball concludes with DJ Bassmotion.

The Budapest-based French DJ will bring high-energy beats to the crowd, turning the Street Ball into a lively open-air dance floor late into the evening.

The programme is complemented by diverse gastro offers. Visitors can enjoy melted cheese sandwiches by Raclette by Lili, specialty pizzas from Bambino Pizza, and drinks and ice cream from Petit Koncept.

At the L’Occitane stand, guests can also enjoy hand massages and take part in a prize draw.
