Adam LeBor, Author & Journalist
Adam LeBor is a British author and journalist, based in Budapest. He started work as a foreign correspondent in 1991, covering the collapse of Communism and the Yugoslav wars.

He's worked in more than 30 countries, enjoyed some hair-raising adventures along the way, and now reports on Central Europe for The Times (of London).

As a budding novelist and literary critic, he reviews thrillers and crime novels for the Economist, and non-fiction for the Sunday Telegraph and Literary Review.

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I first visited Hungary for a week in the winter of 1990, on assignment for Elle magazine.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
I have also lived in Berlin, Paris, Jerusalem and spent lengthy periods in various parts of the former Yugoslavia.

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
The irridescent quality of the light on the Danube. And how well Hungarian women maintain and present themselves.

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Lunch or dinner at Cafe Kor, drinks at Szimpla kert - from bistro to boho. See Parliament square, the Castle, Margaret Island, district VII.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Garlic fogas fillets

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Dreher világos

7.What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Zongora

8. What do you miss most from home?
Frank Cooper's Oxford marmalade

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Architect

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Politician

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Balaton

12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
On the beach in Tel Aviv

13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
The Eagles. I was so impressed by the lyrics to Hotel California I wrote them out. 'You can check out but you can never leave' - wow!

Book. Unless its the book of the film.
