Xpat Interview: Stuart Rossi
I'm English and have worked for a well known aero engine manufacturer since leaving school. After spending many years on the engine test beds, I took a position in customer support to directly have contact with airlines.

I have to be flexible and willing to travel and get posted all over the world at a moments notice. I spent 5 years in China, but normal assignment length is 3 years. I'm currently supporting Wizzair, and I'm the only one from my company here so have to be on call 24/7 I like to golf, although I didn't have many opportunities over the last year.

I'm an avid skier, and intend to take up cycling again. The picture's taken in Dubai with my daughter. She lives in the UK with my ex, but comes with me on all my holidays.

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?

My company assigned me here to support the Wizzair operation. We supply the engines in case you're wondering. Anyway that was just 5 weeks ago.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
I've been an expat for 14 years now, living in Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria, Japan, China, Qatar, UAE, India. My job has me traveling to other remote places like Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan for short term visits to smaller customers.

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
Getting scammed by the taxi driver during my first week. He gave me a fake 5,000 note. It was a good lesson to be more careful in future as I'm normally so trusting.

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
I'm still learning where to go myself, I want to go to the memento park and communist museum, if it's good I'll take my friends when they visit

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Goulash but prefer the stew to the soup - is there anything else on the menu!

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
I try to keep very few basic items, Beer, Gin, Vodka, Lemon and you may find some ham and cheese also.

7.What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Hello (when they mean goodbye)

8. What do you miss most from home?
Family really. I've been away too long now to miss material things, but Marmite is usually in my suitcase on return trips.

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
I love my job, would never look to change it.

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
Anything monotonous like shop keeper, security guard,

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
Sestriere in Italy skiing - I adore skiing and can also snowboard pretty well

12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
Zambia, Botswana and Namibia. There's 21 of us going on a Dragoman overland tour (look them up on the net) This will be something special.

13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Long time ago, but Simple Minds were great and saw them a few times in concert.

14. What can't you resist?
Chocolate - still think cadbury's dairy milk takes some beating. In India and Middle East they used to sell a high melting point version which was awful.

15. Red wine or white?
Mostly red, I like South African Pinotage but always experimenting with new ones.

16. Book or movie?
Movies, I have a great set up at home, and can watch good movies several times. It takes ages to get through a good book, just too busy

17. Morning person or night person?
Bit of both, tend to get up at 7 and even if I stay out late on the weekends I still wake up at 7

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Racism.

19. Buda or Pest side?
I stayed at the Hilton Buda and found everything too spread out. Now I'm living in Pest and finding a lot more to do, it's also nearer to the office.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
One thing I've always quoted is "Buy Cheap, Buy Twice" i.e. I have expensive taste and like quality not quantity.
