Xpat Interview: John Connolly
I was born in Liverpool England but I have lived and worked in many cities Birmingham and London, Mallorca,Florence, Caribbean Cruise ships, Stuttgart, Libreville-Gabon,Budapest and Sopron, several Swiss cities,Almaty-Kazakhstan,Seville, Sofia, and Bucharest always following my casino career.

Hobbies including singing,wine collecting and studying languages, Studied at French Institute and Studio Italia-Budapest, private German lessons in Sopron. Keen interest in Opera and Poetry, Favourite football team Everton.

Father of two daughters Izabella (14) and Amélia (12) excellent relationship with former wife who is the proprietor of Meseforrás Családi Napközi.

Ten continuous years living in Hungary before recommencing my travels, although still consider Budapest my home and spend all of my free time here in Budapest.


1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?

I targeted Budapest as a place to live and work after the Berlin Wall came down.I visited in September 1990 and soon after I started to teach myself Hungarian at home in Reading, England. I was job searching in the London newspapers when I saw an advertisement for an experienced Casino Manager which is my profession. I arrived late April 1992,I was offered a mangers position at the Las Vegas Casino located in the the Hyatt Hotel.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?

Gabon, West Africa.

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
How cheap the tickets were for the opera house!

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Visit the fisherman's bastion and dine at the Kéli Vendéglõ.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Halaszlé :-)

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
Tokaji Aszú.

7.What is your favourite Hungarian word?

Kenyér, the first word I spoke when I had just arrived, my English boss asked me on my first day "what is the Hungarian word for bread", my brain went racing through it's memory banks.

8. What do you miss most from home?
The BBC,documentaries which are not dubbed over.

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Cabaret Singer, it's a hobby of mine.

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?

Postman,can't stand barking dogs.

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?

Florence,Tuscany,Italy. I love the Chianti wine region.

12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?
Egypt, I long to sail down the Nile.

13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?

Otis Reading.

14. What can't you resist?
Chocolate.

15. Red wine or white?

Egri Bikavér.

16. Book or movie?
Book, Great Expectations or any of Dickens's work.

17. Morning person or night person?
Night obviously because of my profession.

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
People trafficking especially of girls for the sex trade.

19. Buda or Pest side?
Pest looking towards Buda.I love the fact that you can have your feet planted firmly in the city but see the nature of the hills.Andrassy ut is one of my favourite streets in the World.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.Confucius.
