Xpat Interview: Phillip Gamble
An Australian graduate of Environmental Management and an international professional specialising in all areas of sustainability. I am currently seeking a meaningful opportunity with a progressive Central European concern, in areas where solutions beyond compliance are sought. I always wanted to live in Europe and undoubtedly fate brought me here, now that I own a Puli it seems I have got to leave in search of greener pastures.

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
My first trip to Europe culminated here on purpose, for 2 months at the start of 2005. We then moved back in July 2007.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
I spent a season mostly snowboarding in Whistler, BC Canada in 1998-9

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
On the first visit, I was captivated by everything from ice-skating on the Balaton to visiting the Atomic Power plant at Paks.
Returning to live I was disappointed to discover that the changes inherent in becoming an EU member hadn't been taken advantage of and the possibilities to work within my chosen field depended upon Hungarian language fluency. Since then, the surprises have been mostly political.

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Everything must be structured around visiting The Terror House when hungover & then washing off that experience in Szechényi. If the guests can't be roused on Saturday & taken there surreptitiously then they win the right to go involuntarily on Sunday. My time as a tour guide on a bike, segway or crawling between pubs has otherwise proven invaluable.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Lángos but I choose not to indulge more than once a fortnight.

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
A metal tube of some sort of sauce or condiment.

7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
Mostly those that can be used in multiple situations or the reverse, eg. Tenylég? Biztos! .

8. What do you miss the most from home?
Opportunities to be employed on a full-time basis, oh and family.

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Cricket administrator, a paid role will become available soon after the International Cricket Council welcomes Hungary as the 106th affiliated nation in June.

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
See above.
The growth of the game relies on someone to organise as well as coach players at the grass-roots, including amongst Roma and whilst this is a job for which I would be willing to learn the language, the responsibility is just too large.
Being a club vice-captain as well as a representative at international level for Hungary (albeit, unsuccessfully when playing at home for the reserves squad at Szodliget during August's 7- country Euro T20 tournament) I have witnessed the enormous workload required to run such an organisation. Hence, my tremendous respect goes to all those involved.

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
On Hencse golf course.

12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
In the snow but it will actually be on a beach.

13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
Playing sport & listening to music were my hobbies and the first concert I ever went to was Dire Straits.

14. What can't you resist?
Lacking tact.

15. Red wine or white?
I really only drink wine, including bubbly to enhance food so it depends on the meal.

16. Book or movie?
Read the book and then watch the movie, when possible.

17. Morning person or night person?
Night but sometimes consequently then both, also.

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Intergenerational Equity, the predominant principle of the 5 that underpin Sustainable Development (fenntartható fejlődés). The underlying theme is one of over-population and over-consumption leaving few resources for the future.

19. Buda side or Pest side?
Buda's either for working in or somewhere to retire i.e. to have children.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
Determination is key.
