Xpat Interview Two: Andreas Mensch - Former Chef At Sofitel Budapest Chain Bridge
1. What’s been happening at work and at home since your first Xpat Interview?

My two boys started Kindergarten, making lots of friends and picking up 2 new languages (Hungarian and English) besides their Russian and German. At work, we have launched great new menus and interesting culinary projects. Most recently, we started the Atrium Sunday Brunch (I believe it’s the best brunch in town). And, on the 15th of June we are launching our new À la carte menu.

2. On a scale of 1 to 10 how happy are you with your life in Hungary, and why?
Right now I think it’s a 3. I enjoy living and working here but have concerns over the economy and politics.

3. What’s the best party you’ve been to while in Hungary, and why?
All the parties where my wife has input - they are definitely the best ones.

4. What’s your favourite drink?
Hungarian Wine it is just amazing!!!

5. What hidden talents do you have?
I live my life on a plate, nothing hidden.

6. What was the most interesting travel trip you have ever taken?
By car, with my wife and our two kids, touring Austria with no plans just enjoying life’s journey.

7. If you were given a wish that could come true, what would you ask for?
World peace – but that might prove difficult...

8. What’s the last book you read, and movie you watched?
A Games of Thrones by George R. R. Martin, and the serials after it and his other A Song of Ice and Fire books .

9. If someone wrote a biography about you, what would the title be?
“Andreas Mensch: Life on a plate”

10. What is the perfect pizza toppings combination for you?
Salami, mushrooms, cheese.

11. If you could trade places with any other person for a week, real or fictional, with whom would it be?
With the Hungarian Prime Minister.

12. On a scale of 1 to 10 how unusual are you, and why?
Assuming 1 is boring, 5 is normal, 10 is eccentric? Perhaps a 7? It’s true that I am a regular guy, a family man. But I have a fire inside me - a passion for great food, wine and good company.

13. What’s the best website you’ve ever visited, and why?

14. Who do you admire the most, and why?
My wife, she gave me 2 beautiful boys and always looks out for me.

15. What do you like best and least about living in Hungary?
Best - the fresh produce available and the good wine. Least – politics.

16. What has made the biggest impact on your life so far, and why?
Getting married to my beautiful wife and having my 2 wonderful boys…. Life turns around totally, in a brilliant and amazing way.

17. If you won USD 30 million, what would you do with the money?
Open a small luxury hotel.

18. If your life had a theme song, what would it be?

19. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
Always where my family is.

20. In ten years from now what will you be doing?
I will be the General Manager of a luxury hotel, enjoying a rewarding career and the good company of friends and family.
