Kenny Berg, Singer in Budapest
Kenny, born and raised in Dundee, Scotland, now proudly calls Budapest his home. With more than a dozen singles released across all major streaming platforms, he’s always chasing the next song to share with the world.

In Budapest, Kenny runs his own brand of live music nights, blending international and local talent into unforgettable evenings. For the past two years, his flagship event The Kenny Berg Experience has brought music to countless expats, locals, and travelers passing through Hungary — and it shows no signs of slowing down.

His mission? To make small but meaningful changes to Budapest’s music scene — something he’s delighted to see is already becoming a reality.

Check out The Kenny Berg Experience on instagram for up to date shows and listen to him on Spotify.

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?

I’d been back and forth for years helping run a summer camp, but I finally made the big move in early 2019. Spending so much time in Budapest, I couldn’t ignore how alive and vibrant the music scene was. So, about nine months before an unforeseeable global pandemic (great timing, right?), I left London and the rat race behind to chase a lifelong dream of becoming a professional musician. I figured, what could possibly go wrong?

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?

Not officially, unless you count moving from my hometown of Dundee, Scotland to London. And honestly, that felt like its own kind of culture shock!

4. Friends are in Budapest for the week - what must they absolutely see and do?

Easy! They’ve got to catch one of my nights with The Kenny Berg Experience (shameless plug incoming). It’s a floating live music series where expat and local musicians come together to show off just how much talent this city has. And trust me, Budapest has world-class musicians if you know where to look. Check out The Pulse on Sundays, HoffHouse on Wednesdays, and Bortodoor Wine Bar on Thursdays—you won’t regret it.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?

It might sound cliché, but nothing beats a real goulash cooked slowly outdoors in a weathered old bogrács. There’s just something about the whole scene: a big garden, the smell of stew in the air, old men nodding approvingly after a quick taste test — and then finally tearing into it with fresh bread. Just don’t forget the sour cream!

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?

That sour cream lol.

7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?

There have been a few throughout the years but hearing Vissza! Vissza! Vissza! when you finish playing your set on stage is kinda magical.

8. What do you miss most from home?

Family and friends, of course. But since you asked what — I’ve got to say a proper Scottish-style doner kebab. Something about the sauce… no place on Earth has nailed it yet.

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?

Game developer — or maybe professional “idea guy.” My brain is constantly trying to make things better, and I’ve dreamed up some pretty wild concepts over the years. Right now, I’m actually working on a never-done-before project that combines music and game development. Can’t say more just yet… but stay tuned.

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?

Anything that would directly hurt another human, some of the things going on in the world are abhorent and some people are being paid to do it, not for me.

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?

Tenerife South with the love of my life Beka, for her birthday — such a great escape.

12. Where do you hope to spend your next holiday?

Would love, love, love to visit Laos, south east asia for like 2 months.

13. Apart from temptation what can't you resist?

Playing another song when I hear a crowd shout Vissza!

14. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?

Band: The Libertines.
Film: Pulp Fiction.
Hobby: Kickboxing.

15. Red or white?

Pink! The world already has enough division.

16. Books or films?

Hmm i watch way more films than I do read books but love an audio book, listening to "name of the wind" at the moment and its top tier.

17. Morning person or night person?

Such a night person.

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?

Anything where the “solution” involves hurting or killing people. That’s never the answer.

19. Buda or Pest?

Pest for the nightlife, Buda for the views and relaxation.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?

Dont argue with idiots! they will bring you down to thir level and beat you with experience!
