I helped offer a Christmas lunch to the least well-off in Budapest today. It was the best thing I’ve done since I arrived here. The Hungarian Interchurch Aid organisation ran the event, with support from local companies, and I went down with a small group from the Embassy to do what we could to contribute.

The Constitutional Court struck down provisions on the notion of family and inheritance law in the act on family protection on Monday. The court established that certain provisions contravene the Basic Law. It found that the act on family law defined family too narrowly as the marriage of one man and one woman only.

Art historian Mária Illyés, daughter of the late Gyula Illyés, has found a hitherto unknown novel by the writer when arranging his manuscripts. The handwritten text could have been written by her father between 1949 and 1956, Illyés said on Tuesday. Budapest’s Játékszín will reopen as a private theatre and celebrate its centenary today with a production entitled Mr. és Mrs. Owners Alexandra Metz, Tamás Bánk, Kristóf Németh and Attila Szűcs hope to stage 15-20 shows a month at the Teréz körút venue by next spring.

The plaintiff, a vocational secondary school teacher in Cegléd, said he will not give his name as he fears he may not find a job elsewhere.
