Új Kezdet (New Start) has formally announced it will be stepping into the national political arena as a new party. At a press conference held Saturday morning in Budapest, party chairman and longtime Gödöllő mayor György Gémesi (above, third from left) unveiled the party’s platform and introduced its executive board (pictured).

The petition for a local referendum about Budapest to withdraw its bid for hosting the Summer Olympics in 2024 has significantly deteriorated Hungary’s chances in the competition to become a host city, the non-profit company that drafted the bid said on Saturday.

Zsolt Borkai, head of the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB), said that the opposition parties had weakened the capital’s chances of staging the 2024 Games. It is now up to the municipal council to decide whether Budapest intends to stay in the running to host the event, he said.
