Perhaps I haven’t spent enough time on the plight of the homeless in Hungary. The United Nations estimates the number of homeless people in Hungary at 30-35,000, of whom about 8,000 are in Budapest. Tuesday's meeting of the Hungaricum Committee in Székesfehérvár saw the addition of four new products to the list of Hungaricums: the Csaba sausage, goose liver products, Tokaji Aszú wine and Béres Drops dietary supplement preparation. The Committee also came to a decision on the winning design for the Hungaricum trademark.

A Turkish cultural centre will open in Budapest at Andrássy út 62 on Thursday, 12 September. The opening ceremony will be attended by Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Omer Celik, Human Resources Minister Zoltán Balog and professor Hayati Develi, who will be the head of the new Yunus Emre Institute.

Tourism is exiting the economic crisis and according to estimates the volume of tourism this year could beat last year's record by a further 8 percent with a total of 23-24 million guests nights spent in tourist accommodation by holidaymakers from both at home and abroad, the Office of the Prime Minister's Deputy State Secretary for development programmes announced.

By Ferenc Kumin: Recalling Hungarian tourism back in 1989, the year of the opening of the iron curtain, it was quite a bit different from what we find today. Back then, Hungary, particularly Lake Balaton, was a popular summer destination for tourists from East Germany and other parts of the eastern bloc but a little off the beaten path for most others. How times have changed.
