Hungarian Police Launch Over 1,000 Investigations Into People Smuggling

Up to mid-November, Hungary’s police launched 1,168 investigations connected with people smuggling, compared with a total of 219 last year, the daily Magyar Idők reported. Zoltán Boross of the National Investigations Office told the paper that the police disbanded 20 gangs and had started proceedings against 193 suspects, out of which 68 were arrested.

Prosecutors have ordered an investigation into the damaging of the Soviet memorial on Szabadság tér on October 23 by Jobbik MP Elõd Novák, state news channel M1 reported. Novák had attempted to remove the hammer and sickle from the monument after holding a press conference on the square. When police stopped him, Novák began to attack the plinth of the memorial with a hammer and chisel.

A Pest County court suspended a lawsuit filed by the National Land Management Fund (NFA) against the organic farm of Kishantos and Greenpeace Hungary. Last year, the NFA filed a lawsuit against the Kishantos Rural Development Centre saying that it had caused damages to the state for more than six months by using land that it had been leasing in the past but then lost the eligibility to use.
