Government officials commemorated the August 20 national holiday nationwide, remembering the creation of the first Hungarian state by St Stephen. Speaking in Eger, northern Hungary, Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén said it had been St Stephen’s decision that the country should not become subordinated to any power, whether the Holy Roman Empire or the Byzantine Empire.

Two cattle were slaughtered in violation of regulations at a Tiszafüred farm some days previously.
