Hungary’s tax and customs authority (NAV) said on Tuesday that it is investigating an international money laundering and cigarette smuggling operation, and it has so far apprehended 33 suspects. A Syrian man in preliminary detention for his alleged role in clashes between migrants and police last week was found in possession of a total of nine passports, eight of which were issued to people other than himself, Hungary’s national police said. Earlier, the daily Népszabadság reported that the 39-year-old Syrian man known as Ahmed H had a total of seven passports.

The Szeged county court, in southern Hungary, ordered the preliminary detention for one month of a Syrian man who was allegedly one of the organisers of clashes between migrants and police last week. The Syrian known as Ahmed H is also alleged to be a member of a terrorist front. A court spokeswoman said that the man held a Schengen visa but had entered Hungary illegally.
