Sunday Shopping Ban Extended To World Heritage Sites

The cabinet has decided to extend the ban on Sunday retail activity, to take effect on 15 March, to world heritage sites, government spokesman András Giró-Szász has said. In addition to large areas in central Budapest, the decision will affect the towns of Sátoraljaújhely, Szerencs, Sárospatak and Tokaj in the Tokaj historical wine region in northeastern Hungary.

Hungary’s President János Áder returned two laws to parliament for reconsideration. Both laws were passed in parliament last Tuesday. The first law stipulates that public employees should have an obligation to report to their employer if they are subjected to a criminal procedure.

Gyurcsány said he had phoned deputy policy chief Árpád Szabadfi on the night of Sept. 18, 2006, when the attack on the TV headquarters in Budapest took place.
