Banks In Hungary To Pay 9.5 Billion Forint Fine For Cartel

Hungary’s Competition Authority (GVH) has imposed a 9.5 billion forint fine on 11 commercial banks for the operation of an illegal collusion (cartel) during a repayment scheme for foreign currency mortgage-holders two years ago. According to the GVH, the banks cooperated and shared confidential business information between September 2011 and January 2012 to reduce the scale of mortgage repayments.

Retail sales slowed to a 0.3% rise, year-on-year, in September, after 1.4% growth in the previous month, according to seasonally adjusted figures from the Central Statistics Office. The annual rise in fuel sales was the third largest this year, up 3.1%, helping to lift the data into positive territory.

The amount of outbound FDI by Hungarian enterprises in 2012 was EUR 8.210bn, EUR 5bn above the level registered one year earlier.

Turnover on the Budapest Stock Exchange was 10% lower in April than in March, the bourse announced yesterday. Turnover fell to Ft 168 billion for April, from Ft 188 billion in the same month of 2012, a daily average of Ft 8 billion.

According to data published earlier today by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), the budget deficit calculated on the basis of EU methodology was 2% of GDP in 2012, which is more favourable than formerly anticipated by the European Commission in its 2012 Autumn Forecast.
