The 11th annual Budapest Circus Festival begins today with 75 performers from 13 countries at the Fõvárosi Cirkusz. A selection panel has chosen 30 acts from around the world to compete in the international competition in Budapest from Thursday through to next Monday.

The first Budapest Circus Festival was held 20 years ago, in 1996 and as a result of the notion and casting of the professionals of the Hungarian Circus And Variety Non-profit Ltd. Clarinet player Sándor Benkó, founder of the popular Benkó Dixieland Band, died on Tuesday at the age of 75, his family announced. Benkó started the group while a high school student in 1957. Its first album was certified a gold disc. The band toured the world, took part in many music festivals and received numerous awards. The band has no fewer than 1,800 professional recordings.
